Examples of Possible Tours

The following descriptions give you a glimpse of the adventures that await you. Both the length and route of your tour can be customized according to your preferences and do not have to follow the examples below.

Erigat l’aoûd – 3 Days

Start your journey in Mhamid, known as the “village at the end of the road.” Trek through the sandy desert landscape dotted with tamarisks, and pass through the Oued Nnaâm (Arabic for "Valley of the Ostriches"). After rainfall, this area transforms into a picturesque plain covered in flowers, small sandy elevations, and shaded spots under tamarisk trees. The highlight of this tour is the Erigat l’aoûd (Arabic for "Horse Dunes"), a small yet stunning and lesser-known dune landscape.

On the return, you'll cross Ras Nkhel (Arabic for "End of the Palm Grove") and explore areas that were once used for agriculture amidst date palm groves. The tour concludes back in Mhamid.

La Vallée du Drâa – 5 Days

This tour begins near the historic, still-inhabited Kasbah of Tamegroute, a village renowned for its Zaouia (Islamic religious school), its ancient Quran library with texts dating back 800 years, and its traditional pottery, which you can visit.

From there, you’ll hike through a valley framed by two rocky mountains that opens into a stony plain. The route follows the Drâa Valley, leading you into vast palm groves. After crossing the often-dry riverbed, you'll arrive at Bougawar (Berber for "Raven Dune"), a scenic dune landscape.

Your journey continues through more palm groves, bringing you to the ancient Kasbah Zaouia Sidi Salah. As you leave the palm groves, you’ll cross the Drâa riverbed once again. The landscape here shifts to small dunes and sandy plains with tamarisk trees. The tour ends in Ouled Driss, a peaceful village 6 km from Mhamid, home to a charming traditional kasbah and an informative local museum.

Le Grand Sahara – 8 Days

This epic tour begins in Mhamid, leading you into a vast desert where the civilization is quickly left behind. The landscape transitions from sandy terrain with tamarisk trees to vast rocky plateaus resembling a moonlike surface.

The journey continues through the spectacular dunes of Bougarne (Arabic for "Horn") before you arrive at Oued l’Atache (Arabic for "Thirsty Valley"), a fitting name for the dry, arid landscape. Next, you reach the Oasis Sacrée, a stunning desert oasis with palm trees and a well where dromedaries can quench their thirst.

From the Oasis Sacrée, you head towards the legendary Chegaga dunes, one of the most iconic and majestic dune fields in the region. These dunes rise up to 200 meters, offering panoramic views of a golden sea of sand, also known as "La Mer de Sable" (the "Sand Sea").

The next two days take you across this vast sandscape towards Iriqi, a vast dry lakebed. From here, Jeeps pick you up and drive you to Foum Zguid. The route follows rocky tracks along the Oued Mdour (Arabic for "Turning Valley") and past tajine-shaped mountains rising in the distance.

Alternatively, for those seeking a more adventurous experience, the trek can be extended on foot or with dromedaries, with the possibility of ending either in Mhamid or Foum Zguid, but this requires additional time.
